Docket No: UML 05-11
Primary Inventor: Alkim Akyurtlu
Other Inventors: Alkim Akyurtlu,Nantakan Wongkasem,
Title: Chiral Metamaterials
Technology: Nanotechnology/NEMS
Description: This invention describes simulation results validated by experiments on real devices that are comprised of novel repeating chiral structures of varying shapes and dimensions and made from conducting metals periodically arrayed upon a dielectric background. These chiral metamaterials possess many interesting properties including a negative index of refraction, which leads to fascinating phenomena such as the reversal of the Doppler Effect and Snell’s Law upon interacting with plane polarized light in various frequency ranges.
Applications: The following are some of the different industries where this type of technology may be utilized: biomedicine, drug discovery, optical sensing, medical imaging, oil exploration, telecommunications and research instrumentation, miniaturization of optical circuits, near-field microscopy, sub wavelength lithography & imaging, optical sensing & monitoring of biological elements at the cellular as well as sub cellular level.
Benefits: Such material’s unique negative index properties can be advantageous in a variety of fields where optical manipulation is of fundamental importance. The calibration of such materials can be carried out at sub wavelength nano meter dimensions, therefore creating an extensive number of possible and exciting novel applications.
